You are here: Home > Gloucestershire FAQs > What is Fairford known for?
Fairford is most famous for two attractions that have given the town a reputation far beyond Gloucestershire. The first is the Church of St Mary, which contains one of the finest and most complete collections of medieval stained glass windows in England. These windows date from the late fifteenth century and are considered exceptionally important because they survived periods of religious reform and civil unrest when many similar examples elsewhere were destroyed.
The second is nearby RAF Fairford, home to the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT), one of the world's largest military airshows. Every summer, the event attracts aviation enthusiasts from across the globe and brings thousands of visitors to the area. The combination of remarkable medieval heritage and a strong connection to modern aviation gives Fairford a unique identity that sets it apart from many other Cotswold towns.
